Pend Oreille Forestry Competition

Inspiring the Next Generation of Natural Resource Leaders

The Pend Oreille Forestry Competition is an annual hands-on event that brings students from across Northeast Washington together to test their knowledge and skills in forestry, natural resources, and environmental science. Hosted at the scenic Indian Creek Community Forest near Newport, WA, this event challenges students through real-world scenarios in tree identification, compass and pacing, forest health, timber cruising, equipment identification, and more.

Participants compete in teams, interact with local forestry professionals, and explore career pathways in natural resources. The competition is open to high school students and serves as both an educational field day and a qualifying event for regional and state Envirothon teams.

Event Highlights:

  • Interactive stations led by foresters, conservationists, and educators
  • Skill-based challenges that mirror industry practices
  • Opportunities to network with professionals in forestry and natural resource careers
  • Awards and recognition for top-performing teams

The competition is coordinated by Pend Oreille Conservation District in partnership the Kalispel Natural Resource Department, local schoold districts, state agencies, and industry experts. Join us in supporting youth leadership, outdoor learning, and forest stewardship!
