Forest Health Cost-Share Program

A dense forest with mist weaving through the trees.

Pend Oreille Conservation District's Forest Health Cost-Share Program aims to help private landowners improve forest health, reduce wildfire risk, and promote long-term resiliency on their property. This program provides technical assistance and financial support for forest management practices such as thinning, pruning, slash treatment, and fuels reduction.

How the Cost-Share Works

Qualified landowners may receive up to 75% of the total project cost reimbursed, while the landowner contributes the remaining 25%. Reimbursement typically occurs 4–6 weeks after project completion and verification by a POCD representative.

Steps to Participate

  1. Schedule a Forester Consultation
Contact POCD to schedule a site visit with our contracted forester. During the consultation, the forester will:
    • Assess the current condition of your forest
    • Identify natural resource concerns such as overstocking, insect/disease risk, or wildfire vulnerability
    • Provide recommendations for management activities
  2. Determine Program Qualification
Based on the forester’s assessment, POCD staff will determine your eligibility for the cost-share program. If your property qualifies, we will work with you to develop a Forest Health Management Plan tailored to your goals and natural resource needs.
  3. Enter Into a Cost-Share Contract
If approved, POCD will issue a cost-share agreement outlining approved practices, the reimbursement rate (up to 75%), and expected timelines. Work must be completed in accordance with the plan and approved practices.
  4. Complete the Project
You may complete the work yourself or hire a contractor. Once the work is finished, POCD staff will inspect the project to ensure it meets program standards.
  5. Receive Reimbursement
Submit project invoices and receipts. After verification, POCD will issue your cost-share reimbursement within 4–6 weeks.
