This event takes place each year in May at Pend Oreille Park here in Pend Oreille County. This is a high school level competition including schools from Pend Oreille County and Spokane County. Prior to the competition the teachers educate the students on Forestry, Wildlife, Soils, Water Quality, and an environmental issue topic designated by the Canon National Envirothon. The teams (of five students each) rotate through five 30-minute testing stations: Environmental Issue, Wildlife, Forestry, Water and Soils. Two additional stations are dedicated to the environmental issue, one station for preparation of visual aids (flip charts) which must be made on site and one for an oral presentation to a panel of three judges, for a total of seven stations. This year's environmental issue was "Water Stewardship in a Changing Climate." Students studied the objectives on the national website, www.envirothon.org to help them prepare for the issue test. Each station's test is worth 100 points. The oral presentation is worth 200 points. The preparation station is not scored; however, the quality of work done at that station is reflected in the presentation score. There are a total of 700 possible points. The winning team competes in the Washington State Envirothon. The state registration fee (including food and lodging) is paid by POCD.
