BOY SCOUT TROOP 696 EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT

This spring groups of volunteers led by Boy Scout Troop 696 planted 425 shrubs, installed tree protectors, weed mats and watered each individual plant site at the Cusick wetland Education site (formerly the site of the old Diamond Match mill). A load of compost was brought in by Steve Yergens. US Forest Service donated mesh tube tree protectors. Sue Staples provided water hoses to reach the area. In addition, Cusick high school students from Nick Pease's Environmental Science classes moved topsoil and learned about the site which will become their outdoor classroom. Poles, Inc. sonated a truckload of beauty bark. Moonlight Falls Landscaping and Q&S Construction also donated labor and materials for a sprinkler system and support piers.

Clay Ridgeley also designed the arbor in the picnic area which was built by the Newport High School Metal Shop class. George Stuivenga, POCD Supervisor, played a big part in prepping the site. The Newport High School Wood Shop class constructed a picnic shelter and Gary Yann, a retired teacher, assisted in the reconstruction on site.

The second phase of the project, which is the wetland restoration, is set to begin in August. Many thanks to all those who contributed to the first phase of this rewarding project. If you would like to volunteer your time, or donate labor or materials , please contact Charlotte Yergens at POCD at (509) 447-5370.

First day: Looks overwhelming!

Oh well, we can do it! We're Boy Scouts!

What are all those little different colored flags, anyway?

There's gotta be a place to dig where there's no rocks!

Recruits are here! this is what ya gotta do!

Lyle, plant it, don't eat it!

First, we gotta go get some good black dirt.

Then, we try to dig a hole that is big enough. I keep hitting something!

Okay, we got out the steel bars to dig up them rocks.

Nothing like a little sun and sweat to make a person take his shirt off. Wow, am I white!

Isn't there anything else to plant--something smaller, maybe?

When's lunch?

OK, let's get them aspen planted. Why are they SO tall!?

I had better stand back when Nick is digging!

Okay, let's protect the new plants from deer and mice.
How about a square weed mat for those nasty, noxious weeds, too.

Thanks to everyone for your help!
