Upper Pend Oreille Sub-watershed Ranking (POWR), a Washington Dept. of Ecology grant The northern portion of Pend Oreille County contains many tributaries which contain either Bull Trout (endangered species) or West Slope Cutthroat (species of concern). This grant from the WA Dept. of Ecology (DOE) will establish baseline water quality data for 16 watersheds which are important to the Pend Oreille Watershed Planning Unit. The creeks identified are Pewee, Slate, Flume, Sweet, Sullivan, Cedar, Sand, Mickey, Exposure, Muddy, Lost, South Fork Lost, LeClerc, Mill, Smalle, and Trimble. The water quality data collected under this grant will lead to BMP implementation projects prioritized by local citizens, not agencies. Various educational events will be conducted for our county residents to include but not limited to; recycling, erosion control, forest stewardship, storm water awareness program and water conservation. So far, the City of Newport and all the county schools are on board. If you or someone you know lives in these communities, have them contact us. We would like them to be part of the Citizen's Committee for ranking these watersheds. Agencies will not be present at these meetings.
POINT (Pend Oreille Implementation Non-point Treatment) Phase II This grant addresses actual practices to reduce non-point pollution on streams identified under previous water quality monitoring programs. The POCD is assisted by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to develop best management practices (BMPs). These practices can be cost-shared under this grant as well as leveraging other agencies monies. The goal is to reduce the out-of-pocket expenses to landowners to install BMPs. These projects combined with natural resource educational opportunities lays a new foundation for working with small- and large-acreage landowners in the most developed areas of our county.
